So here in Buchanan, summer weather has arrived. This means....Heat! Now I can't complain to much cause it was only about 77 degrees, but there was very little wind so I was still pretty warm!
Now I have to preface this post with saying, I do not consider myself to be an outside runner at all (more important not a real runner yet). So today's run outside was a new experience, and not necessarily a great one.
So now that I am home in Buchanan MI for the next few weeks before I head out to Colorado, I am without the services of the student workout center in the basement of Alumni Hall. To be honest, I miss that. I like treadmills a little bit better because I can regulate my speed better than I personally allow myself to. So I needed to find someplace to run. The best thing I could see as of now was to walk over to Buchanan High School and run on their track. Two things about this. One: It is at the bottom of an arena type set up- thus a lot of stairs down to get to it. This isn't so bad on the way down, but after the run- those stairs are not helpful AT ALL. Secondly- Its a track and its not a treadmill. Yes it gives me a different view as I run around the track, but it is a totally new ballgame for me.
So I am going to do something new in this post. I need advice....and bad! I am going to post a few questions/problems that I have and if you have any suggestions/advice/inspiration feel free to comment here or email/call/text/facebook me with it as well. Its time to get serious and NOW!
Problems:
1. I need new shoes- suggestions as to good shoes to wear/where to get them for less than a lot of money?
2. I had some pretty bad shin splints today- suggestions on how to deal with those?
3. I had my feet going numb as I was running- is that a problem?
4. Any other suggestions/advice?
Thanks all for the support/advice so far! You are all awesome!!

1. Getting shoes is going to be vital. You have to get fitted so you know which type of shoe you need: neutral, motion control, stability or cushioned. Then, start looking online. You should try stuff on in a store, but once you find something you like, 99 times out of 100 you can find it somewhere online for much cheaper.
ReplyDelete2. Suck it up. Those aren't gonna go away. You can RICE them and take ibuprofen, but they aren't going anywhere anytime soon. That's just one of the joys of running!
3. Not normal, but not typically a huge deal either. It just means that your legs and feet aren't ready for the repetitive pounding of the run. Should get better with time and during shorter runs, worse during long runs.
4. Regulate your breathing. If you can't maintain a conversation while you run, you're going too fast.
Great plan, Dan! I love it. Which half marathon are you shooting for? The River Bank Run 25K is just over a half marathon and is about a year away . . . .
